HISTORY STATES: from Ottawa Historical Society:THE DAWES COMMUNITY (located originally on Cedar Ridge) "They called it Dawes, and sometimes Timber Hill. There was a trading post, a post office, a school and it was the home of a number of Cherokee families who had taken land in the area for allotments. The location is six miles west of Miami on a tree-crowned hill that breaks the prairie flatness into a welcome landmark. But first the hill was known only to a few trail riders, and wandering Indians, and possibly outlaws. For a long time after the Cherokees had claimed it in a long-ago treaty, it was just that a landmark. The hill may have resulted from a cataclysmic up heaval of nature long before any man knew this region. It flung ton-sized boulders about like toys and left smaller stones on the surface so that those who found it later could make stone fences with them. A spring of sparkling water sprang from hidden depths to comfort man and beast. It is still there. The history of the Dawes settlement is intimately involved with descendants of a group of five McGhee brothers, Scotch-Irish in descent, who had come from Georgia in 1835 with the Cherokees and intermarried with them."
