A recent home inspection rated the house's structure and facilities as "above average". The architect who supervised the restoration of the house on a recent visit commented that the house was "fully comparable to the great mansions of 18th-century Virginia". His letter to the owner is posted below. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. More detailed information is provided below. This elegant home began as a very modest one room settler's house c. 1709. Built with ax-hewn posts, beams and hand sawed wide-plank wood floor boards-the house sits on a hilly knoll with a backyard of apple trees and a view of a nearby pond and distant mountain range. Entering the house from the backyard through an iron strapped Dutch door the visitor is taken back to the 1700s facing a large stone fireplace & beehive oven and the exposed second floor joists overhead which say 'pioneer times' along with the original bright blue wall wainscotting and antique candle wall sconces. The keeping room (second kitchen in pioneer times) adjoins a modern kitchen and breakfast nook with new Jenn-Aire appliances, a six burner gas stove, a 22 foot long granite kitchen counter-top and a mobile kitchen work table. Passing through the keeping room door the visitor is translocated into a 1800s Greek Revival center hall displaying a rare copy of wallpaper from the estate of George Mason, delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Congress, On the floor lies a beautiful hand painted Colonial floor cloth. Entering the parlor on the right the visitor sees a Federal parlor of an earlier date and across the center hall on the left a Victorian parlor of a later date. Between the Victorian parlor and the kitchen is an office or perhaps a bedroom and adjoining full bathroom. Moving upstairs from the center hall the visitor is struck by the luminous light from the hand blown glass and gold-leaf chandelier on the second floor in the hall & sitting room adjoining 4 bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry room, storage room and 3 generous walk-in closets. Throughout the house the visitor may observe other rare Americana artifacts, clawfoot bathtubs, antique door locks, for example. Once a 'wilderness' in the English Colony of New York the commute today to New York City by metro train or car takes 70 minutes. Stores and services are a few minutes away in Middletown, New York. Soons' large apple orchards surround the immediate area and Bear Mountain Park, the Hudson River and West Point's Eisenhower Hall's entertainment and summer outdoor concerts are a 40 minute drive away.
